What is a LAN party?

A LAN (Local Area Network) party is a gaming event where players gather in person to play multiplayer games over a localized network connection, often without internet lag. While some events encourage participants to bring their own computers (BYOC), some organized LAN parties provide rental options for a fee, allowing you to use pre-setup machines.

There are many advantages to LAN gaming compared to online play, including almost no lag, better communication among teammates, faster file transfers, and a stronger sense of community. LAN parties create an environment where gamers can build friendships, socialize in real-time, and stay updated on the latest games and tech trends. The in-person nature adds a social element that online gaming alone cannot offer.

What should I bring?

If attending a BYOC (Bring Your Own Computer) LAN party, you should pack:

  • Your computer (PC or laptop) and monitor

  • Essential peripherals: mouse, keyboard, headset, and any cables (power, video, and at least a 10-foot ethernet cable)

  • A mouse pad

  • Enough disk space to store files or games shared at the event

Note: Speakers are generally discouraged, as they take up desk space and may disrupt other players.

What games will be played?

LAN parties typically focus on specific game genres. Common categories include:

  • First-person shooters (FPS)

  • Real-time strategy (RTS) games

  • Massive Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Games (MMORPGs)

Many LAN events revolve around one or two genres or games, and depending on the crowd, tournaments might be organized for competitive play.
